Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 1 November 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in Pure Platinum/Metallic Gold/Black/Sail. By the fourth model Tinker Hatfield had turned the line into a design series with its own language, and the Air Jordan 4 is the one that made that language structural rather than decorative. Where the 3 introduced the elephant print and moved the Jumpman to the tongue, the 4 built the shoe around visible support hardware on the sides of the upper, a look nobody else on a court had. Platinum Gold takes that engineering silhouette and finishes it in cool metallic grey with gold trim, which is a very different proposition from a team colourway. In grade school sizing, it is a young wearer's introduction to the most mechanical-looking shoe in the archive.
Metallic grey and gold is easier to wear than it sounds because both are neutrals. Try black tapered joggers with an elastic cuff sitting above the collar and a grey hoodie, so the gold trim is the only warm note. For a smarter look, dark straight jeans, a black quarter-zip and a khaki jacket keeps the metallic reading as texture rather than shine. The 4 has more midfoot structure than a Jordan 1, so lace it evenly and do not overtighten through the support panels. Wipe metallic surfaces with a dry cloth, since abrasive cleaners dull the finish permanently. Keep them out of rain and check fit at the toe regularly as feet in grade school sizes grow quickly.
Air Jordan is the line that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and the 4 is one of its most collected models. The culture came from basketball crossing into hip hop: Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoes into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried them into music. Travis Scott has since collaborated on the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6 under Cactus Jack, which pushed the 4 further into music culture. The resale market this line anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and grade school sizes now sit inside it.
The 4 is a layered build: a structured upper with support panels on both sides, a lace system that threads through them rather than sitting flat, and Nike Air cushioning, which has been part of the line since the Air Jordan 2. Platinum Gold puts a cool grey across the main panels and pushes gold into the trim and branding, so the hardware reads as hardware. Grade school sizing means a narrower volume and lighter overall build than the adult pair. Metallic finishes scuff to a duller grey rather than tearing, and the trim shows wear before the panels do.
