Culture Note™
Released on 17 February 2022 and part of the Jordan Why Not Zer0.5 line. This release has a textile upper in Beach/Rattan/Vast Grey/Off Noir. Russell Westbrook is a signed NBA athlete for Jordan Brand, and the Why Not line is the series that carries his name and his number. It only exists because the brand became a standalone Nike division in 1997 with its own athlete roster, apparel and collaborations, rather than remaining a single signature model, and the fifth shoe in a player's line is proof that the roster model works. Honor The Gift is the name attached to this particular makeup on the box, and it puts a partner's language on a signature athlete's shoe: two names sharing one upper, which is how most of the brand's interesting product has been made since the collaboration programme took hold.
Two clear uses. Playing: compression base layer, team shorts, ankle socks, and a proper warm up before you trust the traction pattern cold. Lace through every eyelet and re check at the first stoppage, because uppers loosen as they warm. Off court: black tracksuit trousers with a plain hoodie, or grey sweats with a tee, since a signature performance model already reads as sportswear and does not need help. Keep court pairs off concrete if you want the outsole to survive. After play, remove the insoles, air both parts, wipe grit off the outsole, and never leave them sealed in a bag overnight.
Jordan Brand's collaboration programme runs across streetwear, luxury and music, taking in Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side, Travis Scott with the Cactus Jack Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, and Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side. Putting a partner's name on a signature athlete's model is that programme applied to performance product rather than to retros. Westbrook shares a roster with Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson and Luka Doncic as signature NBA athletes, plus Trae Young and Chris Paul, which is the depth that makes these projects possible.
This is a performance basketball shoe, so judge it on lockdown, traction and how it feels after forty minutes rather than on how it photographs. Nike Air cushioning has been in the Jordan line since the second model, and the modern signature shoes build on the engineering the line added later, including carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness and knit uppers from the thirtieth model onward. Nike has not published a stack height, plate material or foam name for this pair, and none is invented here. Check the heel hold before anything else: lace to the top eyelet, stand, and decelerate hard. A signature guard shoe with a loose collar is not doing its job.
