Culture Note™
Released on 15 October 2023 and part of the LeBron Witness 7 line. This release has a mesh upper in Light Bone/Phantom/Flat Pewter/Black. The Witness line is the accessible LeBron shoe, and Light Bone with Phantom is its most restrained possible reading: two off whites, almost no contrast, a basketball shoe dressed like a piece of studio equipment. LeBron James is a Nike signature athlete and endorser, which puts this in the lineage the company opened when it signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and discovered that a player could become a product line. The Witness sits deliberately below the numbered signature models, built for the weekend player rather than the collector. The EP designation points at the engineered performance build made for outdoor and international court conditions, where the surface eats outsoles faster than a polished indoor floor does.
On court: pair with plain black or grey shorts and a neutral tee so the shoe stays the clean point in the kit, and lace tight through the top two eyelets because the Witness relies on midfoot lockdown rather than a stiff shell. Off court: wide cargo trousers, a cream hoodie and white socks, keeping the whole outfit inside the same bone and phantom range for a tonal look that suits the colourway. Occasion is rec league, outdoor runs and gym sessions. Size true to length but consider a half up if you wear thick basketball socks. Wipe the outsole before playing indoors, brush mesh dry, and clean the midsole with a damp cloth rather than soaking it.
LeBron James is one of the athletes who defined the modern Nike era, and he was among those who publicly backed the company when it built a long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick from September 2018, a decision that drew product burnings and police union condemnation alongside broad support. That is the version of Nike that basketball built. The path runs from the 1984 Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed advertising, through the shift that made Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max staples of urban and hip hop dress, to a company that is the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and G League from 2017, extended again in October 2024.
A big man's shoe, built with support ahead of lightness. The upper combines synthetic overlays and mesh in Light Bone and Phantom, a monochrome scheme that shows the panel structure clearly instead of hiding it under colour. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole that the brand has been engineering since before the 1987 Air Max made it visible, carries the impact loads under the heel and forefoot. The outsole pattern is the part EP versions change, with a more durable rubber compound for rougher courts. Off white uppers on a basketball shoe are a commitment: court dust settles into mesh and does not brush out easily. Expect a locked down midfoot and a collar that supports rather than flexes.
