    Culture Note™

White with black stripes is the original logic of this shoe, and the version most people picture when they think of a low profile leather flat. The Mexico line launched in 1966 as Onitsuka's flagship, built for athletes going to the 1968 Mexico City Games and released early so it could stand against Adidas and Puma before the stadium filled. It was the first shoe to carry the Tiger Stripes, and on a white leather body those black crossed panels are as legible as the mark ever gets. Everything else in the range is a variation. This is the control.
Two recipes. First, mid blue straight jeans with a white tee and a black leather jacket, the plainest good outfit there is, where the shoe matches the tee and the stripes match the jacket. Second, khaki chinos with a navy crew knit for a weekday that has no dress code. This is the pair that works everywhere and forgives nothing about upkeep. Take your usual size in the narrow, slightly long last. Protect the white leather before first wear, wipe the toe and sole edge down after every wear, and clean with mild soap and a soft brush rather than anything that will yellow the leather.
This is the version that travelled. Phil Knight began importing Onitsuka shoes into the United States and founded Blue Ribbon Sports with Bill Bowerman in 1964 to distribute them, a partnership that later collapsed in dispute and pushed Blue Ribbon Sports to launch a brand of its own. The two companies are not related today, and the modern Onitsuka Tiger, revived by Asics in 2002, is a fashion label rather than a performance one. What survived from that era is the outline you are looking at, and since the early 2020s it has been a staple again as taste moved toward slim, low profile silhouettes.
Slim leather upper over a narrow last, low flat profile, thin cupsole, and the Tiger Stripes stitched on as structural overlay panels that hold the quarter together while functioning as the logo. White is the most demanding base the model offers. Every crease across the toe box shows, the medial side picks up scuffing from your own stride, and the sole edge marks on the first day out. The compensation is that the black stripes stay perfectly sharp against it and the shoe photographs cleanly from any angle. Underfoot it is flat, thin and flexible, with ground feel from the first wear and no arch support at all.
