Dark Moss puts the 1906R somewhere the brand's grey archive rarely goes. The 1906 platform belongs to New Balance's technical two thousands running catalogue, drawn in the period when a running shoe was expected to look engineered, with visible panelling and a midsole that announced its own function. Bringing it back in a deep green shifts the reading from laboratory to landscape. That suits a company whose running credibility was never built on glamour: the thread runs from the Trackster in 1960, the first running shoe offered in varying widths, through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams, to sponsorship of New York Road Runners.
