Released on 20 February 2024 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a patent leather upper in Sea Salt/Black. The 550 is a basketball shoe from the New Balance archive that spent years overlooked before the brand brought it back and let it become an everyday low top. Its appeal is that it never tried to be a lifestyle shoe: it is a court silhouette with court proportions, and it looks correct because it was designed for a job. Sea Salt with black patent is the dressed up version of that. Patent leather belongs to evening and to basketball's showier decades rather than to a running company from Boston, and putting a gloss panel on an off white court shoe gives the model an edge it does not have in matte leather.
Utility
Off white with a gloss black panel is a shoe that can go out at night, so use it where a plain leather low top would be too casual. First recipe: black wide leg trousers with a black knit, letting the sea salt base break up an all dark fit and the patent connect to the top half. Second: indigo denim with a white shirt, where the gloss adds a formal note to something plain. The low collar looks best with a full length hem. Sizing runs true with a shallow toe box, so a broad foot should take the wider fitting. Wipe patent with a soft damp cloth only, never brush it, and keep the pale leather away from dye transfer from raw denim.
Influence
New Balance's basketball business is far younger than its running one, and it is real: the company sponsors the NBA and signs players, with Kawhi Leonard's OMN1S signature shoe launching in February 2019. That court credibility is what stops a shoe like this from being fancy dress. The 550's revival worked because the brand's plainness had already been reclaimed as a design position by normcore and then high fashion, so an unfashionable old basketball shoe arrived exactly when unfashionable was the currency. Patent finishing is the point at which the model stops apologising and admits it wants to be looked at, which is a reasonable thing for a basketball shoe to want.
Construction
A leather basketball upper cut low, with the block N on a panelled side wall and the black sections finished in patent so they read as gloss against the sea salt base. Patent behaves differently to standard leather: it resists dirt better, it creases more sharply and permanently, and it cannot be brushed back into shape, so it rewards care in the first weeks. Court shoes ask for a flatter, firmer platform you can feel the floor through, a broad rubber outsole for lateral grip and a padded collar for ankle hold, and the 550 keeps all three. Multiple width fittings matter here, because leather will not stretch its way out of a bad fit.
