Released on 22 February 2024 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in Reflection/Sea Salt/Blue Haze. Blue Haze is a pale, slightly grey blue, the sort of colour that only makes sense when the weather turns, which is why it arrives as part of a spring grouping. The 550 is the right shape for it: flat, court derived, with wide clean panels and none of the layering that makes New Balance's runners busy. This is a brand that came into shoes sideways, starting in 1906 outside Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company and finding its identity through fit and support rather than through style, and it has stayed privately held under Jim Davis since 1972. That independence is why a soft seasonal blue can sit next to a technical runner in the same catalogue without either looking like a compromise.
Utility
Two ways to run it. Cream wide leg trousers with a white tee and a light grey knit gives you a full soft palette where the blue is the only cool note. Or washed denim with a navy crewneck, which sets the pale blue against a deeper version of itself and keeps the outfit from floating. Best used for daylight: weekends, walks, lunches, travel in dry weather. Court lasts run snug through the midfoot, so use the width fittings rather than sizing up. New Balance's reputation for plainness is what makes its soft colours land. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, favoured by Steve Jobs and later by Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore and then high fashion reclaimed that plainness in the 2010s until muted colour became the point rather than the compromise. A hazy spring blue is a direct descendant of that shift. Construction
Pale blue over a white base is the lightest a court shoe gets, and it changes what you should expect from ownership. The panelling on this silhouette is broad and flat, so there is nowhere for a mark to hide, and the foxing around the sole is the first thing that will show city dirt. In exchange you get the cleanest read of the shape itself, since a low value colourway shows the actual lines rather than a colour blocked version of them. Underfoot, the house logic has been to separate structure from shock absorption since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, and the result on a court last is firmness and stability rather than softness. Expect a snug midfoot and a low, planted stance.
