Released on 7 March 2025 and part of the 992 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Grey/Silver Metallic. The 992 arrived in 2006 as part of the 99x sequence that began with the 990 in 1982 and ran through the 991 in 2001, and it has become one of the most respected numbers in the range. This pair is Made in USA, a designation New Balance treats as a product signature in its own right rather than as a footnote, and one of the reasons the brand prices above its competitors. In black, the shoe drops the grey that made the family famous and takes on a harder character. The proportions stay exactly as they were, generous, supportive and unfashionable by design, but the colour turns a suburban comfort shoe into something considerably more severe.
Utility

Construction
Black across the upper is what separates this from the greys the 99x family is known for. It reads the panel work as one continuous surface and hides scuffing on suede and mesh far better than a pale tone ever will. Underneath sits ENCAP, the classic New Balance midsole introduced with the 995 in 1986, which encapsulates a soft EVA core inside a moulded polyurethane rim: the polyurethane holds the shape and resists compression set over years of wear while the EVA takes the impact, so the ride stays stable without going dead. Made in USA construction is stamped on the tongue badge and is a real part of the price. Multiple width fittings remain the reason this last suits so many different feet.
