Released on 12 May 2023 and part of the Fresh Foam X More line. This release has a synthetic upper in Slate Grey/Concrete/Reflection. Fresh Foam X More Trail v3 is a genuine off-road running shoe, not an archive revival, and it belongs to the part of New Balance that never stopped making equipment. Moon Daze names a pale, hazy colourway that softens what is otherwise a maximal trail machine. The company's connection to running is its longest thread, from the Trackster in 1960, the first running shoe offered in varying widths, which spread through YMCA fitness programmes and cross country teams at MIT, Tufts and Boston University, through to its sponsorship of New York Road Runners today. That anchor in amateur running rather than celebrity sport is why the technical line still gets designed for runners.
Utility
This one earns its keep off pavement. Use it for trail sessions, long easy mileage on mixed terrain, and hiking days where you want cushioning rather than a boot, and lace it snug through the midfoot before descents so your toes are not slamming forward. As a casual pair it works with technical wear: black running tights or nylon trousers with a light shell, or wide cargo trousers and a fleece for a gorpcore read that suits the pale Moon Daze tone. Do not use it as a gym or lifting shoe, since a maximal stack is the wrong platform for lateral work. The rest of its cultural life came later and mostly by accident, when the 990 family turned into the American dad shoe and normcore reclaimed its plainness. Construction
The name tells you the platform. Fresh Foam, introduced in 2014, is a proprietary EVA blend moulded as a single piece and tuned zonally, so cushioning and support are placed exactly where the foot needs them rather than spread evenly, and the More series is the maximal end of that idea. On a trail build that translates into a lot of foam underfoot with the outsole and upper doing the job of keeping the ride controlled over uneven ground. A pale colourway like Moon Daze will show trail dirt quickly, which is a fair trade for how it looks. New Balance's width fittings matter more here than in a lifestyle shoe, because a poor fit on descents causes real problems.
