Designed by Jerry Lorenzo and released on 17 May 2019 as part of Nike's Air Fear Of God Strap line. This release has the Black/Black-Fossil colourway. Nike Air Fear of God is the line where Nike handed a performance basketball brief to a fashion label and let the result stay a basketball shoe. The Raid is the low, aggressive shape in that family, and Black is the execution that strips it back to volume and proportion. There is no colour blocking to decode and no team to read, only the shape and the way the panels sit. That is a hard thing for Nike to do, because the company's whole visual grammar since Carolyn Davidson drew the Swoosh in 1971 has depended on a mark you can see from across a street. An all black build makes the silhouette do that work instead.
All black is a permission slip. Recipe one: black tailored trousers with a wide leg, a black crew knit, a long charcoal coat, treating the shoe as the base of a monochrome outfit rather than as a sneaker interruption. Recipe two: washed grey sweatpants, an oversized black tee, black socks, the relaxed reading where the silhouette does all the talking. It works day and night and is one of the few basketball shapes that survives smart casual. Fit true with a snug lace up, since the low cut relies on lockdown. Wipe the midsole regularly because black shows dust, brush any nubuck dry, and store away from heat.
Nike's fashion authority is a byproduct of its sports authority, not a separate project. The 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the company the shoe of basketball and, through it, of hip hop, and from the 1980s onward Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became status objects in urban dress before turning into mainstream casual staples through the 1990s and 2000s. When a design led label is given the basketball chassis, it is borrowing that accumulated weight. An all black Raid is the version aimed at people who want the reference without the announcement.
A low, wide basketball derived build using Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole that has been the company's cushioning platform since the technology became a visible design feature from the 1987 Air Max onward. On this line the Air is treated as an architectural element rather than a hidden component, so the midsole reads as part of the silhouette instead of a base under it. An all black finish means the materials carry the entire visual load, and mixed textures across the upper will separate visually only in direct light. Black also hides scuffing better than any other option on a shoe with this much midsole surface. Expect a substantial shoe on foot rather than a light one.
