Culture Note™
Released on 17 February 2023 and part of the Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Pink Glow/Speed Yellow/Multi-Color. The Air Force 1 Low is the most widely worn shoe Nike has ever made, a basketball pattern that became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s and then simply became normal. This is the All-Star 2023 edition in toddler sizing, which is a specific and slightly funny object: a themed release tied to basketball's showcase weekend, built at a size where the wearer has no idea what any of it means. That is also the point. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, so an All-Star make-up is house product rather than a licence borrowed from outside.
Recipe one: pull-on joggers and a plain sweatshirt, the outfit that actually survives a toddler's day, with the shoe supplying all the colour. Recipe two: denim dungarees with a white long sleeve, where an All-Star colourway reads as the fun element in an otherwise plain fit. Buy with roughly a thumb's width of growing room at the toe and check the fit every couple of months, because small feet change fast and a shoe that fits in spring will not fit in autumn. Choose the easiest closure you can. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth, air-dry away from radiators, and do not machine wash them however tempting it gets.
Nike's relationship with basketball is both cultural and contractual. The 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the brand synonymous with the sport and, through it, with hip hop, and the commercial version of that relationship is the uniform deal covering the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League from 2017, signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. All-Star editions sit at the point where those two things meet: league event, brand showcase, and a shoe that parents buy because the adult version is already in their own wardrobe.
The Air Force 1 Low pattern scaled down: a leather and synthetic upper with the model's familiar panel breaks and perforated toe, a padded collar, and a rubber outsole. Toddler versions typically simplify the closure so a shoe can actually be got onto a foot that does not cooperate, and the cushioning is tuned for a light wearer rather than replicating the adult midsole. An All-Star make-up carries brighter colour placement and event graphics than a standard pair, which on a small shoe reads as playful rather than loud. Check the closure and the collar padding first when buying, because on children's footwear those are the parts that decide whether the shoe gets worn or fought over.
