Culture Note™
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 2 November 2023 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Baroque Brown/Baroque Brown/Baroque Brown. The Swoosh was drawn by a graphic design student, Carolyn Davidson, first used on 18 June 1971 and registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974, and it has been the most valuable rectangle of leather on any Nike shoe ever since. The Air Force 1 Low is where that mark is largest, which is why collaborators reach for this silhouette when they want to say something. This Supreme pair runs Baroque Brown, a deep, rich, slightly reddish brown that turns a shoe born on hardwood into something closer to a dress leather. Brown on an AF1 is a quiet provocation. It refuses the white the shoe is famous for.
Brown leather sneakers sit closer to a shoe than a trainer, so dress them upward. Recipe one: charcoal wool trousers with a clean break, a cream fisherman knit and a navy overcoat, where the brown reads as the leather note the outfit was missing. Recipe two: raw indigo denim, a white oxford and a brown suede jacket, doubling down on the tone until it looks deliberate. Air Force 1s run about half a size large, so size down half. Condition the leather rather than scrubbing it, use a brown-safe cream on scuffs instead of a whitening product, and keep the pair on trees so the toe box holds its line.
Air Force 1s became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s and then a staple of mainstream American youth dress, resurfacing through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks until the silhouette was effectively public property. Collaborations on it work as annotation rather than redesign, since nobody involved is going to change the shape. Nike has been comfortable in that position for decades, whether the partner is a skate label, a streetwear brand or an artist such as Takashi Murakami, who worked with the company on digital product in 2022. Brown is the colour those partnerships choose when they want to be recognised slowly.
Baroque Brown is a tone that depends entirely on hide quality, because there is no contrast panelling to distract from the surface. Collaborator builds on this silhouette typically upgrade the leather and add branding at the heel, lace dubrae or insole, and in a single-tone brown every one of those details reads as detail rather than decoration. The chassis is unchanged: a thick rubber cupsole with a forefoot pivot circle, a moulded padded collar, and Nike Air sealed inside the midsole as a pressurised gas unit, hidden rather than exposed the way it became on the 1987 Air Max. The ride is flat, heavy and protective, and brown leather ages more gracefully than white ever does.
