Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 10 February 2020 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. The Air Max line arrived in 1987, when Nike sealed a pressurised gas unit into a midsole and then cut a window so you could see it. That single decision turned cushioning into a design language, and the 90 is the silhouette where the language settled: stacked panels, a heel window sized to be read from across a street, a shape that announces itself before the logo does. This London edition of the City Pack keys that shape to one city, which is how the 90 has always travelled. It was never a shoe that stayed on a track. It moved through youth dress in Britain the same way it moved through American streets, chosen by people who cared which pair you had rather than which race you ran, and this pair is aimed straight at that reader.
Two ways to run it. First, cuffed straight-leg denim in a mid wash with a plain heavy tee, letting the panel breaks do the work while the rest stays quiet. Second, a technical shell over grey sweatpants tapered at the ankle, which reads as the shoe was originally read, sportswear worn off the pitch. Sizing on the 90 runs close to standard with a snug toe box, so go true and lace through every eyelet for lockdown. This is an all-day city shoe, not a running shoe: pavement, transit, long walks. Brush the panels dry before anything wet touches them, keep the midsole out of direct sun so the foam does not yellow, and stuff the toe box when you store them so the crease does not set.
Air Max models became part of mainstream youth dress from the late 1980s onward, first as status markers in urban and hip hop fashion alongside Air Force 1s and Air Jordans, then again through the casual and athleisure wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s. The 90 sat in the middle of both waves. Nike's voice in that period came from Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, a line Advertising Age later named among the top five slogans of the twentieth century. A city-keyed 90 is a direct descendant of that posture: sport equipment repositioned as something you wear to be seen in.
The centre of the shoe is Nike Air, a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole and left visible since 1987, which is why a 90 sits differently underfoot from a flat court sole. Around it runs the panelled upper the model is known for, cut so a city colourway breaks into blocks instead of washing over the shoe in one tone. Nike's outsole thinking traces back to Bill Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron in pursuit of lighter tread, and that pursuit of grip without bulk still shapes how these bottoms are cut. For wearing it, that means weight carried at the heel, a short settling-in period, and creasing that lands across the toe panel rather than collapsing the whole upper.
