Designed by Bill Bowerman and released on 21 April 2022 as part of Nike's Blazer line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Sail/Olive Aura/Bright Crimson. Jumbo is a single instruction: make the Swoosh bigger. Carolyn Davidson drew that mark as a graphic design student, Nike first used it on 18 June 1971 and registered it as a trademark on 22 January 1974, and for most of the company's history it has been sized to fit a panel. On a Blazer Mid 77 Jumbo it stops fitting and starts overflowing, running across the quarter and past the proportions the shoe was drawn with. Black with Bright Crimson sharpens the effect further, because the crimson is not spread across the shoe, it is used as a hit, so the eye goes to the mark and then to the accent and nowhere else.
Two ways to wear it. Black straight jeans with a black tee and a crimson or burgundy cap, letting the one red accent on the shoe rhyme with one accent up top and nothing else. Or grey sweats with a black hoodie, where the oversized Swoosh becomes the only graphic in an outfit that has none. Do not add another loud graphic; a Jumbo shoe is already the print. Blazers run long and narrow, so a half size down suits many people. For care, clean the light midsole weekly with a magic sponge, brush the upper dry, and protect it before the first wet week since a black upper on a pale sole shows water lines badly.
Nike's most valuable asset is a shape rather than a technology. The Swoosh has been the house mark since 1971, and by 1980 the company held roughly half of the US athletic shoe market and went public on the strength of what that mark had come to mean. Culture did the rest: after the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, Nike shoes became fixtures of urban and hip hop dress and then of ordinary casual wardrobes. Blowing up the Swoosh is a joke only a company with that history can make, because it assumes everyone already knows what they are looking at.
The Blazer is a simple, flat shoe and the oversized Swoosh is the only structural change here. Because that panel is larger than standard, it covers more of the quarter and takes more of the abrasion, which changes how the shoe wears: the mark scuffs before the upper does. Black over a light sole is the most forgiving arrangement on a mid top, since the upper hides marks entirely and the midsole shows them plainly, so the pair ages from the ground upward. Bright Crimson works as a small area of high chroma against a dark field. Underfoot this is a low profile, unstacked sole with no cushioning story, firm and close to the ground.
