Origin
Nike's first professional athlete endorser was not a runner or a basketball player, it was the tennis player Ilie Nastase, and the court shoe has been part of the company's vocabulary from very early on. The Court Royale 2 is that lineage at its most unadorned: a low, clean tennis derived shape with no visible technology and nothing to interpret. Next Nature is the part that dates it to the present. Nike Grind recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, and the Next Nature label is the consumer facing edge of that programme. White and Black is the most literal reading of the silhouette, the palette a court shoe has worn since before anyone thought of it as fashion. It is a shoe that does not argue with you.
Utility
First recipe: dark straight leg jeans, a white oxford shirt worn loose, and a navy or black knit, the standard smart casual uniform that a white and black court shoe was practically designed to close. Second recipe: black cotton shorts and a plain black tee for hot weather, where the white upper does all the lifting and the black Swoosh keeps it from looking like a hospital shoe. Court silhouettes run narrow and low volume, so if you have a high instep, loosen the middle eyelets rather than sizing up. White uppers need maintenance more than they need protection: wipe them the same day, use a soft brush and mild soap on the midsole, and never machine wash, which breaks down adhesives.
Influence
Nike's move from track to court to street happened in stages, and the plain white court shoe ended up as the most portable piece of it. From the 1980s Nike was a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, mostly through Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models, but the quieter court silhouettes rode the same wave into 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure dressing. Where those shoes shout, this one supplies the baseline. The Next Nature framing continues a line of company thinking that started with Bowerman remaking soles in a kitchen appliance in the early 1970s: change what the shoe is made of before you change what it looks like.
Construction
This is a low profile court build: a smooth white upper with black on the Swoosh and heel, on a flat rubber cup outsole with the herringbone family of court patterns underfoot. What makes it a Next Nature product is the material sourcing rather than the shape. Nike Grind takes manufacturing scrap and worn footwear back into new product, and recycled content in the upper and sole is the point of the badge. Practically, that means a slightly different hand feel from a traditional leather court shoe, a little more textured, a little less rigid. The flat sole and low collar give you the ground feel a tennis shoe needs, which on pavement translates into a shoe that feels planted rather than cushioned.
