    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 September 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White/Gym Red/University Gold/Atomic Teal. Biker Tattoos takes the Dunk Low somewhere the model has rarely been: motorcycle club iconography, flash sheet graphics and the dark palette that goes with them. The Dunk was drawn in the mid 1980s to be repainted for college teams, which is why it can absorb a theme this far from its origin without looking forced. Nike has always been comfortable letting a shoe borrow a visual language that belongs to someone else, though it has learned the limits of that in public, notably when Nike SB used Minor Threat's album art in 2005 and had to apologise. A tattoo themed release leans on a style rather than a specific artist's work, and that distinction matters.
Graphic uppers demand plain everything else. Wear them with straight black jeans, a plain white or black tee and a leather or waxed jacket, leaning into the reference without dressing as it. For a lighter read, pair with grey sweatpants and a plain hoodie so the artwork looks like the only deliberate detail in the outfit. This is an all day flat sneaker for walking, gigs and casual wear, not for sport. Fits true. Care matters more than usual here: clean printed panels with a barely damp soft cloth and no scrubbing, avoid solvents and machine washing entirely, and store away from direct sunlight, because printed graphics fade before the leather under them does.
The Dunk's whole modern life is about carrying meaning that has nothing to do with basketball. It went from college courts to skateboarding to general fashion, and Nike has spent two decades using it as a vehicle for themes, jokes and subcultural references. The brand could do that because its credibility was already banked: the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made Nike the shoe of basketball, and through basketball a staple of hip hop and American youth dress. Biker imagery is a long way from that lineage, which is exactly why it reads as a costume choice rather than a heritage claim, and why it works.
The upper carries printed or embroidered tattoo style graphics across the panels rather than relying on colour blocking alone, which changes how you treat the shoe, because a graphic that sits on the surface can wear at the flex points in a way a dyed panel does not. Leather is the base material, and the dark colourway makes fine line artwork read best when the light hits it directly. Underneath is the familiar Dunk platform: a low profile foam midsole and a pivot circle rubber outsole that keep the ride flat and firm rather than cushioned, with padding at the tongue and collar. Fits true to size, tight through the midfoot at first, then settles within a couple of weeks.
