Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 4 March 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has the Multi-Color/Multi-Color colourway. By 1980 Nike held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and had gone public, which gave it the freedom to make shoes about ideas rather than only about sport. The Dunk Low is where that freedom shows most clearly now: a simple low top court shape, cheap to reinterpret, endlessly recolourable, and treated by the company as a storytelling device. City Market takes the market stall as its subject, the produce crates and painted signage of an urban grocer, and translates it into panel colours and material contrasts. It is Nike doing what it has done since it moved to Beaverton in 1990 and opened the first Niketown: turning ordinary American scenery into product.
Two combinations. First, workwear: carpenter trousers in stone or brown duck canvas, a plain heavyweight tee and a chore jacket, which puts the shoe in the register its theme is borrowing from. Second, clean and simple: black slim jeans and a crewneck sweatshirt so the panel colours carry the outfit. Good for weekends, markets and long walking days. The Dunk runs slightly long, so go half down for a snug fit. Protect any textured or nubuck panels before wear, brush rather than wipe, and keep them out of heavy rain because mixed material uppers dry unevenly and can watermark along the seams.
Nike's cultural method has always been to attach itself to places and attitudes rather than only to athletes. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, was named one of the top five advertising slogans of the twentieth century by Advertising Age and is held in the Smithsonian, and it works precisely because it says nothing about sport. Themed Dunks operate in the same space: they sell a mood, a neighbourhood, a memory of a specific kind of street. That is why the model became a staple of casual dress long after basketball moved on from it.
Standard Dunk Low architecture, which is the reason it works as a canvas: a panelled upper where every section can take a different material or tone, a Swoosh that doubles as a structural divider, a padded collar and a flat rubber cupsole. A themed execution like City Market usually earns its premium in material mixing, so expect contrast between smooth and textured panels and detailing at the tongue label, laces and insole rather than any change to the shape itself. Underfoot nothing exotic is happening: no visible Air, no plate, just a firm court sole. That is a fair trade for a shoe you will wear standing up all day.
