    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Team Green/White/Total Orange. The Dunk's original job was to put a college's colours on a player's feet, and the Michigan State pair, style code CW1590 102, is that idea in its purest form: deep green against white, no story beyond the school it names. This grade school version puts it on a younger foot, which is where the collegiate palette now does most of its work, since the buyers wearing it have no relationship to the university at all. That drift is very Nike. The company that started in 1964 selling imported running shoes at Oregon track meets learned early that identity, not performance, is what sells a shoe once the technology is good enough for everybody.
Recipe one: light wash jeans, a white tee and a green varsity jacket, playing the collegiate reference straight since the shoe is already doing it. Recipe two: black tracksuit bottoms and a grey hoodie, isolating the green so it reads as a colour choice rather than a uniform. Green and white is a demanding pair in dusty conditions, so treat the white leather before first wear and keep a soft brush handy. Buy grade school sizes with a thumb width of growing room at the toe rather than snug. Clean with mild soap and a damp cloth, never soak, because water carries green dye into the white panels permanently.
Nike's institutional presence in American sport is enormous: it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years as announced in October 2024. College colours sit upstream of all that, the first place a young player learns to read a team through what they wear. Combine it with the way the Swoosh became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s, and a green and white school colourway ends up meaning something to teenagers thousands of miles from the campus that owns it.
A two tone collegiate Dunk is the clearest demonstration of why the silhouette's panelling works: the green lands on the mudguard, Swoosh, collar and heel while the white base carries the toe and quarter, so the colour blocking reads instantly at distance. The leather upper is stitched rather than bonded, which is why these creases show as folds rather than cracks. Underneath sits the standard build, a foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, giving a flat, firm and stable ride that suits running around on hard surfaces. The grade school last is scaled down and cut a little narrower, so a snug midfoot is normal rather than a sizing error.
