Culture Note™
Next Nature is Nike's line for product built with a meaningful share of content, and Baroque Brown is the version of the Dunk Low that puts that idea in a rich, furniture toned brown rather than the pale palettes sustainability lines usually default to. The recycling argument is not new to the company. Nike Grind takes manufacturing scrap and worn shoes and puts the material back into new products and surfaces, and Next Nature is that programme turned into a consumer facing line. The shoe underneath is still the mid 1980s college basketball Dunk, a shape designed to be recoloured, which makes it an obvious host for a material change that is not supposed to alter the silhouette.
Deep brown is the most underused neutral in a sneaker rotation. Wear it with ecru or stone wide trousers and a cream knit for a full warm tonal fit, or with washed indigo denim and a navy jacket, where brown softens the coldness of the blue. It works with tan, olive, cream and burgundy and fights bright cool tones. This is an everyday walking shoe with a lighter, more flexible upper than a leather Dunk. Fits true to size. synthetics do not take leather conditioner, so clean with mild soap and a soft brush, air dry away from heat, and expect the flecked midsole to hold marks that a plain white one would show more obviously.
Nike's environmental work runs from Nike Grind through material partnerships such as its 2021 tie up with Newlight Technologies on AirCarbon bioplastic, and Next Nature is where that engineering becomes something you can buy in a Dunk. That matters because the Dunk is the model people actually wear: it moved from college hardwood to skateboarding to general fashion, riding the credibility Nike built in basketball through the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising. Putting the programme on the most worn silhouette in the range is a deliberate choice about visibility rather than a quiet backroom initiative.
Next Nature builds use a high proportion of content by weight across the upper, midsole and outsole, and the visible consequence is texture: synthetic panels have a slightly different surface and grain from full leather, and speckled or flecked material often shows in the midsole. In Baroque Brown that flecking sits against a deep warm tone, which makes it read as intentional rather than industrial. Underneath is the standard Dunk platform, a low profile midsole and pivot circle rubber outsole, so the ride stays flat and firm. The upper feels lighter and less rigid than a leather Dunk, so it breaks in faster and creases more softly. Fits true to size.
