    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 January 2025 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Medium Olive/Jade Horizon/Sail/Ironstone/University Red/Sail. Lunar New Year releases are how a company from Beaverton, Oregon speaks to the largest sneaker audiences outside America, and the Dunk is the silhouette it usually chooses because it holds detail without needing a new shape. Nike has always grown by reading other markets: it started in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports importing Onitsuka Tiger from Japan, and only began selling under its own name in 1972 once that relationship ended. A Year of the Snake Dunk Low Retro belongs to that outward looking habit, treating a zodiac year as a design brief rather than a sticker, and using texture and colour to suggest the animal instead of illustrating it.
Two builds. Festive: black or deep red trousers with a clean overshirt, letting the shoe's theming carry the occasion without adding another patterned item. Everyday: washed indigo denim and a plain crew, so the detailing rewards anyone who looks twice rather than announcing itself. Dunks fit long and narrow, so half a size down is the usual advice. Keep this pair for dry days and social wear, since a themed upper is the part that dates and the part that cannot be restored, and hold on to the box and any special laces, because zodiac releases are collected as sets.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Dunk travelled further than most, moving from basketball to skateboarding to general casualwear and back again. Zodiac releases add a second audience with its own reading of the same object, which is why these pairs often sell out in markets Nike once struggled in. Its Indian business is a good example of that difficulty: entering in 1995 through a licensing deal with Sierra Industrial Enterprises, priced roughly 30 percent above competitors, it reported no net profit from 2006 until the financial year ending 2019. Cultural releases are part of how that gap gets closed.
The Dunk Low Retro is a leather court shoe with a padded collar, a long Swoosh doing structural work across the midfoot and a flat sole with a court pattern that descends from Bill Bowerman's waffle tread experiments. Seasonal editions of it usually spend their budget on materials: textured panels, contrast stitching, alternate laces, or a lining you only see when the tongue moves. Treat any textured panel as fragile, brushing along the grain with a dry soft brush and keeping liquid cleaners to the midsole. Store it away from sunlight, since dyed and printed detailing on a themed release fades faster than the plain leather underneath it.
