Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 January 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Multi-Color/Volt/Black/Baltic Blue. The Dunk is Nike's most rewritable shoe. It arrived as a basketball model, was discontinued, was resurrected by skateboarding, and now functions as a blank the brand can print any idea onto. SE marks a special edition treatment, and acid wash is one of the loudest of those: a garment dyeing technique borrowed from denim, where the finish is deliberately uneven so no two pairs read exactly the same. Baltic Blue with green gives it a marine, faded quality, the look of a jacket that has been through a decade of sun. Style code DV1694 900. It is a Dunk that behaves like clothing rather than footwear, which is precisely the point of the treatment.
Faded blue and green want washed, worn clothing around them. First: light wash baggy jeans with a stacked hem, a sun faded green tee and a beaten cap, everything on the same weathered register. Second: cream wide leg trousers, a navy overshirt open, and white socks, cleaner styling where the mottled shoe carries all the texture. It is a warm weather and daytime shoe more than an evening one. Dunks run slightly narrow, so size up half for a wide foot. Do not machine wash a washed finish: cold water, a soft brush and patience only. Detergent lifts dye unevenly and will flatten exactly the variation you paid for.
The Dunk's second life came through skateboarding, and Nike SB's relationship with that culture was not always smooth. In 2005 the division appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised on 27 June 2005 before settling out of court. That scrutiny is part of why Dunks carry weight: skaters made the model matter, and the collector economy grew on top of a community that watched the brand closely. From the 1980s onward Nike was already a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Dunk arrived at that table late but permanently.
Acid wash works because the material takes dye unevenly, so the upper here is doing something a standard leather Dunk never does: mottling, streaking and shifting in tone across a single panel. The panelled construction the Dunk is famous for gives that treatment structure, with each section washing differently against its neighbour. Underneath, the shoe keeps the familiar Dunk platform, a rubber cupsole and a low collar built originally for a basketball court. Nike Air is the house cushioning idea, a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, though the Dunk has always been valued for its shape more than its ride. Washed finishes fade further with sun and detergent, so wash gently or not at all.
