Designed by Peter Moore and released on 8 February 2014 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Aqua/Chrome-Black colourway. Nike SB is the division where Nike had to learn other people's rules, a lesson it received publicly when its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and produced an apology from the company. The SB Dunk High that came out of that era is a flat court shoe rebuilt to survive being landed on. This Diamond Supply Co. build carries the aqua colourway that skate shops still call Tiffany, a pale robin's egg blue against black, a palette lifted from jewellery packaging and applied to a shoe designed to be destroyed on concrete. That contradiction is the entire idea.
Pale aqua against black is a high-contrast pairing that wants a calm outfit. Recipe one: black loose-fit jeans, a black tee and a black coach jacket, letting the aqua be the only colour anywhere on you. Recipe two: washed grey cargo trousers, a cream hoodie and a black beanie, which cools the palette and lets the collar height show through a cuff. SB Dunks fit true to size with a fuller footbed than standard Dunks. Treat the aqua as fragile: protect before wear, brush dry rather than washing, and never let a black panel sit wet against a pale one, because dye transfer on this colour pairing is permanent.
Nike's court silhouettes moved from the arena into urban and hip hop fashion through the 1980s and became staples of mainstream American youth dress, but the SB Dunk took a separate road and built its own canon, decided by skate shops rather than by marketing. Colourways in that canon are known by nickname rather than by style code, passed along verbally long before anyone photographs them. Aqua and black is one of the small handful that graduated from that scene into general sneaker literacy. Nike did not decide that. The shops and the people who skated in them did, which is the only way this line has ever worked.
The SB High spec is where the money goes. Expect a thick padded tongue, a heavily cushioned collar rising above the ankle, and an insole and sole set up to absorb repeated impact, because skating punishes footwear in ways walking never does. Collaborator builds on this silhouette typically upgrade the upper materials, and a plush nap against the aqua reads very differently from smooth leather in raking light. The flat cupsole descends from Bowerman's founding conviction that the outsole was worth reinventing, the waffle iron experiment behind the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer, and on a skate shoe that flatness means board feel rather than heritage.
