    Culture Note™

Metcon is the shoe Nike built for the gym floor rather than for a sport, made for lifting, jumping and short sprints in the same session, and the Free version softens that chassis with the brand's most flexible sole platform. Smoke Grey keeps it unbranded looking, which suits a shoe most people buy for function. The company's whole engineering history is a search for the right amount of give underfoot, starting with Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron in pursuit of something lighter, and running through Lunarlite foam and the Air unit that was made visible in 1987. A training shoe is where all those arguments get tested at once.
First: as intended, gym kit, shorts or a fitted training tight, a crew sock, laces pulled tight through the midfoot for lifting stability. Second: off duty, grey joggers and a hood, where a mid grey training shoe reads as sportswear without pretending to be a lifestyle sneaker. It is not built for distance running, so keep road mileage short, and it is excellent for lifting, circuits and gym classes. Size true. Air the shoe out after each session rather than leaving it in a bag, wipe the upper with a damp cloth, and never machine wash a reinforced training upper, since heat and agitation break the bonded panels down.
Nike's voice for the gym came from its 1988 line, Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden and launched with an advert featuring 80 year old runner Walt Stack, which pushed the brand past elite competition into ordinary effort. That framing is exactly what made the training category possible: a shoe with no sport attached, sold to people whose sport is showing up. Advertising Age later named the slogan among the top five of the twentieth century and it sits in the Smithsonian. The Metcon line is the product version of that idea, equipment for the unglamorous work that happens between competitions.
Training shoes have to solve two opposite problems. Under the heel they need to be firm and stable so a loaded lift does not sink, and under the forefoot they need to flex so you can move, which is what the Free platform contributes with its segmented, flexible sole. The upper is built tighter than a running shoe, with reinforcement through the midfoot and sides to survive rope climbs and lateral work rather than to breathe. Smoke Grey is a mid tone that hides chalk, rubber dust and gym floor marks well. Expect a firmer, flatter ride than any cushioned trainer, and lace it snug, since a training shoe that slides is a training shoe that fails.
