    Culture Note™

Released on 16 October 2020 and part of the Heritage Vulc line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/White/Gum Light Brown/Lucky Green. The Heritage Vulc is the least decorated shoe Nike SB makes and the most honest about what a skate shoe is: a low canvas upper, a vulcanised rubber sole and nothing else asking for attention. Lucky Green with a gum sole is the version that leans on the two elements that have always signalled skate rather than sport, a saturated colour on the panel and a warm untreated looking sole underneath. There is a direct line back to Bill Bowerman's original obsession, which was never about decoration but about what happens between the foot and the ground. This is the cheapest, plainest expression of that idea still in the catalogue.
Green and gum is a warm combination and wants earth tones or plain black around it. Loose black jeans with a white tee and a tan work jacket, or brown carpenter trousers with a cream hoodie so the gum sole and the trouser tone agree. Cuff the hem short, since a low vulcanised shoe disappears entirely under a long break. This is a walking and skating shoe, not a standing all day shoe: the thin sole is honest about that. Sizing is generally true to size on the Vulc last, roomier than a Dunk. Keep the gum sole off wet chalk and light carpet, because it transfers.
Nike SB exists because skateboarders were already wearing Nike without permission, and the division has spent its life proving it belongs. The 2005 Minor Threat episode, where Nike SB used the band's album art and Ian MacKaye responded publicly, forcing an apology on 27 June 2005, is the reference point for why the skate line stayed close to shops and riders afterwards. A plain vulcanised shoe with no graphic is the format that never needed defending. It is also the closest thing Nike sells to the shoes people actually wore before the brand arrived in skateboarding at all.
A vulcanised build, meaning the outsole is bonded to the upper in a way that keeps the shoe flexible and thin underfoot rather than stacked and supportive. That is the entire trade: you feel the board, or the pavement, in exchange for far less cushioning than any Air equipped Nike gives you. The gum rubber sole grips well when clean and picks up grit and marks readily, so wipe it rather than scrubbing it grey. The green upper is the wear surface, and vulcanised shoes fail at the sidewall bond before they fail anywhere else, so avoid soaking them and let them dry slowly, away from radiators and direct sun.
