Released on 21 June 2022 and part of the Jordan Play Slide line. This release has a synthetic upper in University Red/White/Gym Red/Black. In 1984 Nike signed Michael Jordan, and what began as an endorsement turned into a business with its own logic and its own product range. The Jordan Play Slide is that business reaching its most relaxed possible form: no laces, no performance argument, nothing to prove. University Red is the colour that keeps the connection legible, since red is the shade the whole line has used to identify itself for decades and it reads instantly at a distance. A slide in that colour is a signal rather than a garment, which is exactly what a signature line is supposed to be able to do once it has earned the recognition.
Recipe one: black shorts and a plain white tee with white crew socks, where the red does all the work and nothing else in the fit competes with it. Recipe two: light grey sweatpants with a black hoodie for a short errand, the red slide breaking a monochrome outfit at the floor. Slides typically run generously through the band, so take the smaller size if you are between two and expect them to loosen slightly with use. Keep them to warm weather, pool decks and the hour after training rather than long walking days. Rinse chlorine and salt off after every exposure, because both dry out the foam and dull the colour.
Basketball is what turned Nike from a running company into a cultural one. The Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising put the brand at the centre of hip hop, and through the 1980s Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became status objects in urban style before settling into casual and athleisure wardrobes in the decades after. Slides are the tail end of that migration, the piece of team issue kit that never needed reinventing to be adopted. Wearing one in a signature colour is a low effort way of claiming a lineage that took forty years to build.
There is almost nothing to a slide, which puts all the weight on the footbed and the band. The band has to hold the foot without pressing across the top, and the footbed has to be contoured enough to keep you from sliding forward on a slope. A saturated colour like University Red is a manufacturing decision as much as a design one, since bright dyes on foam fade under sustained sunlight, and the difference between a new pair and a poolside veteran shows up as a pinkish cast. Rinse them in cold water, blot with a towel and dry flat in the shade, never on a hot surface, which warps foam beds permanently.
