Released on 21 February 2025 and part of the Killshot line. This release has a leather upper in College Grey/Gum Medium Brown/White. In leather, with a gum sole, the Killshot stops being a tennis shoe and becomes something closer to a plain leather trainer that happens to have a court history. College Grey with Gum, Medium Brown and White is a warm, muted set of tones that has nothing to do with sport and everything to do with wearing the shoe as clothing. Nike's understatement runs deeper than its reputation suggests: the name itself came from an employee, Jeff Johnson, and the Swoosh from a graphic design student, Carolyn Davidson, neither of which was a grand branding exercise at the time. This shoe works the same way, by not announcing anything at all.
Recipe one: brown or tan chinos with a cream knit and low socks, building an outfit around the gum sole and the medium brown accents so the whole palette agrees with itself. Recipe two: dark denim with a grey sweatshirt and a wool overshirt, where the leather upper is smart enough to hold up next to heavier autumn fabrics. The last is narrow, so wide feet should try before buying. Leather and gum both suffer in the wet: water spots the upper and grit embeds in the soft outsole. Wipe after wear, condition every few months, and store with trees so the leather keeps its line.
Nike's cultural reputation is built on maximum volume products, from Air Jordans to Air Max, which became status objects in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s and reappeared across the casual and athleisure wardrobes of the 1990s and 2000s. A leather court shoe in grey and brown is the exact opposite of that register, and it has been adopted by people who want the company's manufacturing and history without the noise. This is Nike operating in the quiet part of its own catalogue, where the appeal is that nobody across the room is going to comment on your shoes.
Leather changes the shoe fundamentally. Where a canvas or textile upper stays soft and creases immediately, leather holds its shape, breaks in gradually and develops a patina rather than simply wearing out, which is why the same silhouette reads as more considered in this material. The gum outsole is the other half of the character: it is softer than standard rubber, grips well on smooth indoor surfaces and marks over time, warming in colour as it ages. That ageing is the point and should not be cleaned away. Condition the leather occasionally, wipe the gum with a damp cloth rather than a solvent, and keep the pair out of prolonged wet weather.
