Released on 14 October 2024 and part of the Killshot line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Gum Yellow/Vintage Green. Nike's first professional athlete endorser was not a runner or a basketball player but the tennis player Ilie Nastase, and the Killshot carries that side of the house. The name is a tennis term, the silhouette is a low, narrow court shoe from an era when court shoes were made to be quiet and closely cut rather than cushioned and loud. This is the second generation, in Sail with Vintage Green, and the pairing is the whole point: an off white that is warmer than a stark white, with a muted green that reads aged rather than fresh. Nike has been in the business of making court shoes since it stopped importing Onitsuka Tiger in 1972 and started building under its own name and Swoosh.
Two recipes for the green. One, full neutral: cream or oatmeal knit, straight leg mid blue denim, the Vintage Green Swoosh acting as the only colour in the outfit. Two, lean into it: olive or khaki chinos with a white shirt, so the green reads as intentional rather than accidental. This is a women's cut, so it runs narrow and slightly snug through the midfoot; consider going up half a size if your foot is wide, and a thicker sock will change the fit noticeably. Best for dry, walking heavy days rather than rain. Sail marks easily, so wipe the upper down often, use a suede or fabric protector spray before first wear, and keep them out of the washing machine.
Nike's court shoes did a quieter cultural job than its basketball line. Where the Air Jordan and the Air Force 1 became loud status objects in hip hop and mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s, the slim tennis silhouette went the other way and became the shoe worn by people who wanted a Swoosh without volume, the anchor of casual and athleisure wardrobes through the 1990s and 2000s. Sail and Vintage Green is the version of that idea most legible to a modern eye: neutral enough for daily use, specific enough to be recognised. It is Nike operating in its understated register, which is arguably harder to do than the loud one.
This is a low volume shoe, which is the key fact for wearing it. The Killshot 2 is cut close to the foot with a slim toe box and a thin collar, so it sits under a trouser hem instead of interrupting it, and the Sail upper with its Vintage Green Swoosh keeps the visual weight low. Sail is a dyed off white, not a bleached one, so it ages into a deeper cream rather than yellowing awkwardly, which is a genuine advantage over a stark white court shoe. Expect it to crease early across the toe because there is little material between your foot and the outside. There is no bulk here to hide behind, so keep the upper clean and the eyelets tidy.
