    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 May 2008 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Sport Red/Pink Clay colourway. The Lobster series is a skate shop release turned running joke turned institution, built by Concepts around a crustacean and a colour, with red the one that started the whole thing. It is regional humour made into product: a New England shop naming a shoe after the food its city is known for and then repeating the idea until it became a format. That is only possible in Nike SB, the part of the company that gives the Dunk to shops rather than to marketing departments. The style code marks it as one of the older references in this catalogue, from the period when SB releases circulated through a few dozen doors rather than an app.
A loud red skate shoe needs a wardrobe that steps back. Faded black jeans with a grey hoodie and white crew socks is the honest version, and it is what the shoe was designed around. For something sharper, navy wide leg trousers with a white tee, where the red becomes a single deliberate accent. Avoid other reds and avoid burgundy nearby. Dry days only, since napped red panels water mark and hold the mark. Sizing follows the Dunk last, long through the toe, with skaters often staying true to size. Brush after each wear and keep the midsole clean, since red makes a yellowed sidewall obvious.
Nike's route into board culture was partly purchased and partly earned. It acquired Hurley International in 2002 and built Nike SB around riders and shops rather than around advertising, which is why a Boston retailer could set the terms of a release like this one. The company has generally preferred ownership or long partnership to one off borrowing, from distributing Onitsuka Tiger between 1964 and 1972 to buying Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars. The Lobster releases are the small scale version of that instinct: a shop given real authorship, repeatedly, over years.
An SB Dunk built to skate specification: a padded tongue and collar to take board impact, a Zoom Air insole underfoot and a rubber cupsole with skate tread. Nike Air here is a sealed pressurised unit you feel rather than see, which is the opposite of the Air Max approach. Red on this release is carried by napped and textured panels rather than flat leather, and shop collaborations habitually add details in the lining, the lace options and the insole that never appear on a general release. Brush dry, never soak, and expect strong red dye to transfer onto pale socks in the first few wears.
