Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 20 June 2025 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Burgundy Crush/Velvet Brown. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, gave Nike a voice that had nothing to do with sport, and that licence to speak outside athletics is what lets an Air Max 90 wear leopard print without it looking like a mistake. This women's makeup runs burgundy as the base with an animal print occupying the overlay panels, a deep wine tone doing the grounding while the spots supply the texture. Burgundy is the right choice for it: a full brightness leopard would tip into costume, while a wine base pulls the print toward tailoring and outerwear, where animal motifs have always sat comfortably in a wardrobe.
Leopard is a neutral if you commit to treating it as one. Wear it with black straight leg denim, a burgundy or cream knit and a black leather jacket, so the print sits inside a dark palette and the wine base ties to the top. The second option is deliberately plain: grey wide leg trousers, a white tee and no jewellery, where the shoe is the only decorated object you own that day. Never add a second print. Air Max 90s fit true to size with a roomy forefoot. Brush textured panels dry, keep water off the printed sections, and never machine wash, since moisture in the midsole damages cushioning.
Nike's own record lists Air Max models with Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as the shoes that became staples of mainstream American youth dress, absorbed through 1980s urban and hip hop fashion and again through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure styling. The Air Max 90 in particular became a canvas because its layered upper gives a designer more separate fields than almost any other Nike silhouette. Animal print is where that flexibility gets tested against fashion rather than sport, and the model holds up, because its architecture is strong enough that decoration reads as a layer on top rather than as a replacement.
The Air Max 90's upper is a stack of clearly separated sections, and on a print heavy execution that separation is doing structural work: the leopard can be confined to specific overlays while the base panels stay solid, so the pattern has a frame instead of overwhelming the shoe. Underfoot sits the family's defining feature, a pressurised Air unit sealed into the midsole and left visible, an idea the Air Max line introduced in 1987 and never abandoned. The waffle sole Bowerman made in a kitchen appliance is the ancestor of that whole way of thinking. Printed and napped panels need dry brushing rather than washing, so use a suede brush on textured sections and keep water off the print entirely.
