Part of Nike's Air Max Muse line. This release has a synthetic upper in Silt Red/Peony-Burgundy Crush-Sail-Gym Red-Light Armory Blue. Air Max is the family where Nike lets the engineering show, starting in 1987 when the brand cut a window into a midsole so you could see the pressurised gas unit doing its work. The Muse is a women's cut Air Max, which means the proportions, the volume and the way the upper wraps are drawn for a different foot rather than shrunk from a men's pattern. The Valentine's treatment gives it an occasion. That is a specific design brief: a shoe that has to look considered enough to be given and be plain enough to wear for a year afterwards, without the colour becoming a joke once the day has passed.
Two ways to wear it. Soft: cream or grey wide trousers with a fitted knit and a long coat, the shoe adding volume at the floor so the silhouette stays balanced. Sharper: black straight leg denim or a black skirt with tights and a leather jacket, letting the occasion colours be the only warm note. Women's specific product sits directly downstream of that idea. An Air Max upper is a layered thing, with panels and overlays stacked so the shoe reads as graphic rather than as a single piece, and the midsole carries the visible Air unit where impact lands hardest. That window is the design device Nike invented in 1987 and has never given up, and everything above it is arranged to frame it. On an occasion release, the material mix usually carries more of the story than the silhouette does, so expect finishes that reward close inspection and punish rain. Protect these before the first wear, brush layered uppers dry rather than washing them, clean the midsole sidewall with an eraser, and dry naturally so glued layers stay bonded.
