    Origin

    chevron
A black Cloudmonster 3 is a contradiction handled well: the biggest silhouette On makes, finished so it draws the least attention it possibly can. The Monster line is the company's maximal statement, the place where the founding sensation of soft landing and hard take off got built tall, and the third generation is the most resolved version of it. The company itself is young and unusually engineering led. All three founders are still involved, Olivier Bernhard on product and innovation and David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti as executive co-chairmen, while Martin Hoffmann, who joined as CFO in 2013, became sole chief executive in April 2025. That continuity is why the Monster still argues the original point.

    Utility

    chevron
Black on a tall sole needs a clean line above it. Recipe one: black tapered trousers with a slight break, a black tee and a grey overshirt, a column build where the sole depth is the only detail. Recipe two: dark denim stacked over the collar with a navy crewneck and a black jacket, letting the shoe anchor the outfit. Use them for long road days, easy mileage, standing work and travel, not for lateral gym sessions where a tall stack works against you. Fit true to size with a roomy forefoot and a firm heel lock. Knock the pods out weekly, brush the midsole walls dry, and air them fully between wears.

    Influence

    chevron
The Cloudmonster is the model most often set against Hoka, the rival On is measured against in the US performance running category where it holds roughly 6.6 percent. It is also the shoe that carried the brand into everyday sight, helped by the lifestyle door that opened when Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger launched in July 2020. On's cultural position is design object, a Swiss engineered running shoe worn because it looks engineered, and the all black Monster is that idea for people who want the ride without the presentation. It is the quiet version of the loud shoe.

    Construction

    chevron
The Cloudmonster uses hexagonal CloudTec pods that load energy on impact and unleash it on take off, a behaviour set by the cavity geometry rather than by the foam alone. On engineers foam into those shapes so compression happens horizontally as well as vertically, which gives a very tall sole multi directional support and stops it feeling unstable underfoot. In full black the geometry reads as texture instead of diagram, so the shoe looks smaller than it is, which is the main reason this colourway sells to people who otherwise avoid maximal shoes. The deep pods still trap stones, and on a dark sole you will not see them, so check by hand.
