Origin
Released on 1 March 2010 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Blue/Red. The Mexico 66 was conceived as a flagship that could stand next to Adidas and Puma, and it launched in 1966 for athletes bound for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Sport is the reason it exists, and White Blue Red is the colourway that says so out loud. A white leather base carries a blue stripe and a red stripe crossing the quarter, the tricolour arrangement that reads immediately as a national kit even when no country is named. On a slim toed flat with no lift, that combination lands as track and field rather than as flag waving. This is the Mexico 66 dressed the way the original brief imagined it, before the shoe became a fashion object.
Utility
Two recipes. First, straight leg raw denim with a single cuff, a plain white tee and a navy harrington, which lets the red and blue stripes act as the only pattern in the outfit. Second, grey sweat shorts, a striped rugby top and low white socks for a summer weekend, leaning fully into the sport reading. Avoid pairing with heavy patterned trousers, because the tricolour stripes already carry the eye. Fit is narrow and slightly long, so take your usual size. Protect the white leather before first wear, wipe scuffs off the toe with a damp cloth the same day, and clean the midsole edge with a soft brush rather than anything abrasive.
Influence
Onitsuka's American chapter is part of why this shape matters. Phil Knight began importing Onitsuka shoes into the United States, and with Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 to distribute them. That partnership eventually collapsed and Blue Ribbon Sports went on to launch its own brand, but the Japanese shoe that started it was this family of low profile racing flats. A white, blue and red execution puts you closest to that competitive era of the model, when the stripes were a performance mark rather than a fashion signature. Since the early 2020s the shape has been back at the centre of sneaker culture as tastes swung away from chunky soles toward exactly this kind of slim, low profile flat.
Construction
White leather over a narrow last, thin cupsole, almost no stack, and the Tiger Stripes doing structural duty across the quarter panel rather than sitting on top as decoration. Here the stripes are split into blue and red, so the overlay that holds the shoe together is also the graphic that makes it. White leather is the most demanding base the model comes in, because every crease across the toe box and every scuff at the medial side shows. The flat cupsole gives you ground feel and very little else, which is honest to the original. Laces run long on this silhouette, and the flat cut sits neatly through the low eyestay without bulking up the throat.
