Culture Note™
Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 15 February 2025 as part of adidas's Superstar line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Sky Rush/Cream White. Pharrell Williams is one of the designer collaborators adidas has worked with longest, and his approach to the Superstar has always been to treat it as a shared object rather than a museum piece. The Superstar 92 is the reference point here: not the 1969 original that a reported 75 percent of NBA players wore by 1973, but a nineties reading of it, when the shoe had already left the court and become clothing. Virginia is the name on this release, and Black is the colourway, which is the most restrained way to present a shell toe. Nothing is competing for attention, so what you notice is the rubber cap, the stripe placement and the proportion, which is the whole shoe.
Two ways. First, all black: black straight leg trousers or dark denim, black outerwear, and the shell toe as the only shape event, which is the most adult way this silhouette can be worn. Second, break it with white: a white tee or shirt against the black upper, letting the contrast happen above the ankle rather than on the shoe. Suits city evenings, studio days and anything where you want a classic without the obvious white leather version. Superstars run long, so a half size down is standard advice. Black leather scuffs grey: condition it occasionally, wipe the shell toe with a damp cloth, and avoid harsh cleaners which strip the finish permanently.
The Superstar's status was handed to it, not built by marketing. Run-DMC released My Adidas on 29 May 1986 without being paid, and at Madison Square Garden that July, with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio in the audience, they asked thousands of people to hold their shell toes in the air. The endorsement deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, and Questlove has called it hip hop's tipping point. Pharrell Williams working on this silhouette continues a lineage where musicians, not designers, decide what the Superstar means. His versions tend to strip rather than add, which respects that history more than a graphic pack would.
The shell toe is the mechanism: a moulded rubber cap wrapped over the front of the upper, made originally to protect a player's foot under the basket and now the most copied construction detail in the company's history. It is the reason the front of a Superstar stays square while the rest of the shoe softens. The Three Stripes run along the sidewall as reinforcement first and identity second, which is how they have worked since adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. A nineties derived 92 build tends to carry a slightly different last and proportion than the original. In full Black, the shell toe reads as texture rather than contrast, and the shoe looks smaller than it is.
