Culture Note™
Designed by Nic Galway and released on 24 January 2024 as part of the PureBoost line. This release has a mesh upper in Legend Ink/Cloud White/Core Black. PureBoost has always been the most straightforward argument for adidas's defining modern cushioning: a shoe with very little structure around a lot of Boost, made so the foam does the work rather than the frame. The 23 update continues that, and Legend Ink gives it a deep navy that reads more city than track. Boost launched in adidas running in 2013 and PureBoost is one of the models built on it, which makes this a shoe with a clear technical parent rather than a styling exercise. adidas has been designing to specific athletic problems since Adi Dassler was watching athletes rather than guessing at what they needed.
Use it for easy runs, recovery days and long walking, where the cushioning is the whole benefit, rather than for track work that wants a firmer platform. Wear medium technical socks, since the flexible upper works with the foot rather than clamping it. Off the road, Legend Ink is the most wearable navy in running: pair with grey tapered sweats and a black shell for an athletic fit, or with dark straight denim and a white tee for everyday wear. Brush the Boost sidewall regularly to stop grey settling into the texture, air the shoes after use, and replace when the foam stops springing back.
Boost is the defining modern adidas technology, launched in running in 2013 and carrying the Ultraboost, NMD, Energy Boost, PureBoost and adizero Adios Boost, and it reset expectations for what foam should return underfoot. That matters in a company whose reputation has always rested on two legs, engineering and culture. The cultural leg was never purchased: Run-DMC released My Adidas in 1986 with no deal in place, held their shoes up at Madison Square Garden that July and signed the first endorsement between a musical act and an athletic company. Boost is the engineering leg doing its job just as visibly.
Boost is a thermoplastic polyurethane developed with German chemical company BASF, made from thousands of fused TPU pellets whose bounce comes from the processing rather than the raw polymer, and it gives higher energy return and more stable behaviour across temperatures than the industry standard EVA foam. That is what sits under this shoe. Above it is a knit or engineered mesh upper built for flexibility rather than lockdown. Boost midsoles pick up dirt in the pellet texture, so brush the sidewall dry and wipe with a barely damp cloth; never machine wash or tumble dry, since heat is what damages bonded midsole assemblies fastest.
