Origin
Released on 18 August 2022 and part of the Adilette line. This release has a synthetic upper in Blue Bird/Bold Gold/Core Black. The Adilette is the plainest thing adidas makes and one of its most durable ideas: a moulded slide with a single banded strap, built for the walk between the pool and the changing room. Because it has almost no design left in it, it is the perfect object to hand to someone else. This pair runs a three way collaboration between Sean Wotherspoon, the Hot Wheels toy car property and adidas, which pulls the slide out of the sports hall and into the world of die cast collectables, flame graphics and toy colour. Style code GX9756. It is the sort of release that only works because the base product is so recognisable that any intervention immediately reads as an intervention.
Utility
Wear them with a thick white or black crew sock, wide shorts and an oversized tee for the intended look, where the graphics get to be the loudest element. The second option is quieter and better in summer: bare feet, loose linen trousers cut short, plain tee, so the slide reads as holiday rather than as collectable. Slides run large on most feet, so if you are between sizes take the smaller one and check that the strap sits across the widest part of the foot rather than near the toes. Rinse them with cool water after beach or pool use, dry them out of direct sun since heat warps moulded footbeds, and never put them in a washing machine.
Influence
adidas built the template for outside collaborators reshaping its product, first with fashion designers including Yohji Yamamoto, Stella McCartney, Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, then with musicians including Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce. Bringing a toy property into that lineage is the logical extension: the archive is deep enough that adidas can afford to be playful with the least precious item in it. The slide has meanwhile become a genuine streetwear object rather than poolside equipment, worn with socks, worn to the shop, worn as the deliberate opposite of a hyped sneaker. This pair is that shift made explicit.
Construction
A slide is defined by two things: the strap and the footbed. The strap holds the whole foot in one band, which is why fit is about instep volume rather than length, and the footbed is a moulded unit whose contour under the arch determines whether the shoe is comfortable for five minutes or five hours. The collaboration works on the surfaces rather than the structure, treating the strap and footbed as printable territory in the toy car register. The Three Stripes remain where adidas has put them since it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. Moulded footbeds pick up foot oils and darken in the contact zones, and printed graphics on flexible material will craze at the flex line eventually.
