Released on 20 April 2021 and part of adidas's Campus line. This release has a cotton upper. The Campus began as a court shoe and settled into life as the suede staple of adidas Originals, the lifestyle arm marked by the Trefoil that was drawn in 1971 and launched for the Munich Games. The 80s cut is the one collectors argue about: lower, softer, closer to the shape that terrace dressers wore down to nothing. This pair hands that shape to South Park and its towel character, so the usual suede palette is swapped for Towelie's pale blue and the character shows up on the shoe rather than on a hangtag you throw away. It is a joke told in a serious silhouette, which is why it lands. You are buying a Campus profile that a cartoon repainted rather than a designer.
Two ways to run the blue. Keep everything else quiet: raw indigo or black straight leg denim, a heavy white tee, a grey zip hood, so the pale towel blue is the only colour in the fit and the suede reads as texture. adidas has always had a second life it did not plan for. This shoe is not asking to be respected on a court, it is asking to be recognised across a room, and South Park's flat animation reads instantly at ten paces, which is exactly what a sneaker graphic has to do. Suede does the heavy lifting, cut in the towel blue that names the pair and carrying the soft nap that makes worn Campus pairs look better than fresh ones. The Three Stripes are not a print. adidas has stitched them onto uppers since it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, back when the stripes reinforced the panel as much as they branded it, and they sit that way here. A flat rubber cupsole keeps the stance low. Character artwork and co-branded detailing replace the plain heel patch. Treat suede as suede: a soft brush after wear, a protector spray before the first outing, and never a washing machine, because a soaked nap goes flat and does not come back to colour.
