    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 July 2017 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Ice Jade/Circuit Orange-Sail colourway. A What The is Nike's most self referential format: one shoe assembled from mismatched panels drawn from other releases, so that each side tells a different story and the pair only makes sense to someone who knows the catalogue. Style code 918321 381 puts this Dunk High in the Nike SB line with Thomas Campbell attached, which makes the mashup an artist's composition rather than a marketing exercise. SB has always worked this way, handing the shoe to a collaborator rather than designing at them, a model shaped in part by the line's 2005 misstep in using Minor Threat's album art, which drew Ian MacKaye's rebuke and a public apology from Nike.
A patchwork shoe cannot share the spotlight. First recipe: entirely plain, black or indigo straight leg denim with a solid tee, no logos or prints anywhere else, so the mismatched panels are the only pattern in the outfit. Second: monochrome grey from top to hem, letting each panel read separately against a blank field. High tops need a hem that clears the collar or stacks over it deliberately. SB padding makes the fit slightly roomy, so go down half a size if you are narrow footed. Clean panel by panel with the gentlest method each material allows, never soak a mixed material upper, and dry slowly away from heat.
Nike SB matters because it made the collaborator the author. The company that had spent the 1980s and 1990s becoming a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion through the Air Jordan and Air Force 1 could not simply import that authority into skating, and the Minor Threat episode of 2005 proved it, ending in an apology after public criticism. What worked instead was ceding creative control, which is how artist built Dunks became the line's most collected releases. A patchwork shoe carrying an artist's name is that arrangement at its most literal: Nike supplies the parts, somebody else decides what they mean together.
This is a shoe made of other shoes. A What The build takes the Dunk High's panelled construction, toe, eyestay, heel, collar and Swoosh as separate pieces, and assigns each one a different material or colour, so the upper becomes a patchwork of leathers, textiles and finishes that behave differently from one another. That is a genuine care challenge: one panel may want a brush, another a damp cloth, another nothing at all, and treating the whole shoe with one cleaner will damage something. The SB Dunk High platform underneath is the skate tuned version, with a padded tongue and extra cushioning underfoot, and the high collar takes about a week to soften.
