Culture Note™
Part of On Running's Cloudmonster line. This release has a mesh upper in All/White. The Cloudmonster is the model where On stopped being polite about its own mechanism. The company started in Zurich in 2010 when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, glued sections of garden hose to a sole to see whether a hollow shape could take a landing softly and then push back hard. Nike turned the idea down. He built it with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti instead, and CloudTec became the house code. Monster is that code amplified, a deliberately oversized stack that makes the pods the silhouette. In black, the women's pair removes the last bit of spectacle from the colour and leaves only the shape, which is arguably the purest way to own one. All bulk, no noise.
All black gives you range. Recipe one, gym to street: black leggings, an oversized grey sweat, a long black puffer, so the tall sole reads as intentional proportion rather than accident. Recipe two, dressed down tailoring: charcoal wide leg trousers cropped at the ankle, a white poplin shirt, a black crossbody, letting the stack add height under a clean line. This is a maximal road cushioning shape, right for long walks, easy runs, recovery days and airports, wrong for lateral training or anything requiring ground feel. Size true, lace to the last eyelet for heel security, and expect the height to change your stride slightly at first. Brush the pods out weekly and air dry only.
On's rise is recent and steep rather than storied: about 6,000 retailers in 55 countries by 2019, a New York Stock Exchange listing in September 2021 that raised roughly 746 million dollars, and 2024 revenue of 2.32 billion Swiss francs, up 29.4 percent, with Hoka as its nearest rival in performance running. The Cloudmonster is a large part of why, because it made the technology legible from across the street. On's athlete world is real, from Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig, who raced the 2012 Cloudracer, to the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. A black women's Monster is that credibility worn plainly, without any interest in being spotted.
The Cloudmonster uses hexagonal CloudTec pods, and On is explicit about the intent: they load energy as the foot lands and unleash it as you take off. That is geometry doing the work, not a foam compound, and the difference matters because the entire brand rests on it. The tall stack means a soft, deep first contact and a rolling, insistent exit, a sensation that suits easy miles more than sharp turns. Black is the most forgiving finish this shape comes in, because the cavities that make the sole interesting are also the ones that trap grit, and dark rubber hides road film. On is Swiss designed and Zurich headquartered, with production in Indonesia and Vietnam.
