    Culture Note™

Designed by Eric Avar and released on 15 March 2021 as part of Nike's Zoom Kobe 6 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Challenge Red/White/Black. All Star colourways exist for the one weekend a year when basketball stops being competitive and becomes a show, and shoes released for it are allowed to be louder than anything a team palette would permit. The Zoom Kobe 6 Protro is the modern rebuild of a low, close fitting basketball shoe from the era when Nike was moving its signature line away from bulk and towards speed. Protro versions update the original with current cushioning and materials rather than reissuing it unchanged, which is why they end up on courts instead of in display cases. The exhibition palette is the point: this is a shoe designed to be noticed on television.
On court, this is a guard's shoe: low, close and responsive, best with proper basketball socks and laced firmly through the midfoot. Off court, wear it with black tapered joggers and a plain hoodie so the loud palette is the only statement, or with grey shorts and a white tee in summer where the colours read as intentional rather than as costume. Take your usual basketball size; low profile models fit snug and need a proper lock at the laces. Wipe the outsole clean before playing indoors, air the shoe out after sessions, and keep textured uppers away from soap that can leave residue.
Nike's basketball position is both cultural and contractual: the brand has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017 under a deal signed in June 2015, extended by a further twelve years as announced in October 2024, and it builds signature product around athletes including LeBron James and Kevin Durant. Signature basketball shoes are where Nike's performance engineering and its status economy meet, a pattern that started when the company signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and turned one athlete's shoe into a business of its own.
This silhouette is built low and tight to the foot for court feel, with a textured upper designed to sit close rather than to add structure. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, has been the company's cushioning platform since it became a visible design feature on the 1987 Air Max, and the Zoom family is its low profile responsive version, chosen here because a guard's shoe needs ground contact more than it needs height. Nike's upper engineering has long aimed at holding the foot with minimal material, the thinking behind Flywire cabling. The rubber outsole is patterned for hard cuts on wood.
