Culture Note™
Released on 13 May 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/University Red/Photo Blue/Black. White with Photo Blue and Red is Nike doing primary colours on purpose, the palette of a track meet rather than of a training log. On the Invincible 3 that brightness sits on top of serious material: ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive it makes, used here in a maximum cushioning everyday trainer instead of in a racing shoe. The company has always mixed the two registers, engineering underneath and showmanship on the surface, ever since it decided in 1987 to make the pressurised Air unit visible and turn the cushioning system into the design itself. This colourway is that habit in a running shoe.
Two uses. One, training volume: easy runs, long runs and recovery days, with technical socks and a thumbnail of toe room, since the soft platform is at its best when you are not chasing pace. Two, casual: grey sweats or navy trousers with a white tee, where the colour blocking looks sporty in the intended way. White uppers need discipline: rinse road dust off after runs, hand clean with mild soap, keep the insoles out to dry, dry in shade, avoid the washing machine entirely and never leave them damp in a bag overnight. Fresh laces and clean insoles make an ageing pair feel new again.
Nike has never avoided being argued about. In September 2018 it built a long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick, who had knelt during the US national anthem, as its campaign face with his own branded product line. The reaction was immediate: people burned product, a police union condemned it, and LeBron James and Serena Williams publicly backed the company. Whatever you make of the episode, it demonstrated something specific about the brand, that it treats controversy as a legitimate marketing position rather than a risk to be managed. Bright, confident colourways come from a company entirely comfortable being looked at.
A deep bed of ZoomX gives soft, high rebound cushioning that stays lively across long runs, and the height that makes it comfortable is also what asks for a properly locked midfoot, so lace it correctly rather than loosely. Nike's upper design descends from Flywire, which uses cables to hold the foot with minimal material, and from Dri-FIT, its moisture wicking fabric platform. A predominantly white upper with bright accents is the least forgiving choice for Indian roads and the best looking one on a start line, so plan for regular rinsing and accept that the midsole edge will pick up marks quickly.
