Released on 10 December 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Dusty Cactus/Bright Crimson/Black. Lunar New Year releases are the one moment in the calendar when Nike lets a running shoe be decorative, and a dragon year gets the most licence of the twelve. The Invincible is a good candidate for it, because the model is already built around excess: it uses ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam Nike calls the lightest and most responsive in its range and the material behind the Vaporfly, in a tall daily trainer rather than a racing flat. Putting a zodiac themed treatment on the shoe that runs the unglamorous miles is a better joke than putting it on a race shoe, and it lands with the runners who actually log those hours.
Use one: recovery and easy running, especially the day after hard work, where a deep soft platform lets you get time on your feet without adding impact. Use two: long steady runs at conversational pace, where the cushioning is most valuable in the last third once your form starts slipping. This is not a shoe for intervals or racing; the ride is too tall to hold a sharp rhythm. Rotate it with something firmer so the foam recovers between runs. Keep it out of washing machines and away from radiators, since heat kills both the foam and any applied graphic, and let it air dry laced loosely after wet runs.
Nike has been a running company since 1964, when a University of Oregon track coach and his former runner began selling imported Japanese shoes at track meets, and running is still where it makes its most consequential engineering arguments. The ZoomX and carbon plate combination in the Vaporfly, launched in 2017, prompted World Athletics to publish shoe rules on 31 January 2020 limiting stack height and plates. Seasonal collections do a different job. They connect the brand to the calendars of the markets it sells in, and they turn a technical product into something you buy for reasons that have nothing to do with your split times.
Height is the defining feature. A deep bed of ZoomX gives you a ride that sinks and pushes back, closer to a trampoline than a cushion, and the structural work goes into keeping the foot centred over that platform, since soft foam at height becomes unstable when you fatigue. Expect a shoe that feels best at easy pace and less certain when you try to turn it over quickly. Themed builds usually carry printed or embroidered detail on the upper, and those surfaces are the first place wear shows. Clean with foam and a soft brush only, never a machine, and let the shoe dry slowly so the foam holds its shape.
