Released on 14 September 2022 and part of Nike's ZoomX Streakfly line. This release has a mesh upper in Total Orange/Bright Crimson/Volt/Black. ZoomX is Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive material in its range, and it exists because of the Vaporfly project that launched in 2017 and rewrote what a road racing shoe could do. The Streakfly is what happens when that technology is pointed at short, fast racing instead of the marathon. Total Orange is the correct colour for it. There is no attempt at subtlety, no white base to soften the statement, just a single saturated orange that behaves the way a racing flat is supposed to behave: visible from the far side of the course and impossible to mistake for a training shoe. Bowerman's founding complaint was that runners deserved lighter shoes. This is that argument with the volume up.
This is race day and fast session equipment, not a daily trainer. Recipe one: black split shorts, a white singlet, letting total orange be the only colour you carry so the shoe reads as intent. Recipe two: black tights and a black long sleeve for cold weather intervals, where the orange is the single point of visibility in low light. Do your 5k and 10k racing and your track and tempo work in it, then take it off. Size with a snug racing fit, close to the toes but not jammed. Air it out after every session, never machine wash it, and retire it on feel rather than mileage, because the foam goes flat before the upper looks worn.
Nike's racing foams changed the sport's rules rather than just its results. Peer research found the Vaporfly could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and World Athletics responded on 31 January 2020 by capping sole thickness at 40mm, limiting shoes to one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability. Compliant models remain legal. That is the regulatory shadow every ZoomX shoe now runs in. The Streakfly sits on the sharp end of it, a shoe built for people racing distances where a fraction of a percent is the entire margin, wearing a colour that makes sure the field knows exactly what is on your feet.
A minimal racing build in total orange using ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam Nike developed as the lightest and most responsive foam it makes. The Streakfly's purpose is short distance speed, so the upper is stripped to almost nothing, the midsole is built for turnover rather than protection, and the whole shoe is designed to disappear underfoot. That comes with real trade offs: thin uppers abrade, minimal outsole rubber wears fast on rough surfaces, and racing foams lose their liveliness faster than training foams. A saturated orange upper this light will also mark easily. Treat the pair as consumable equipment with a defined life rather than a shoe you expect to keep looking new.
