Released on 31 August 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Black/Chile Red/Coconut Milk. The Vaporfly is the shoe that reset what a marathon time is supposed to look like. Launched in 2017, it married ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, to a full length carbon fibre plate built to generate extra spring in every step, and the third Next% is the refinement of that idea rather than a fresh start. This Eliud Kipchoge execution is the version dressed as an athlete's own kit, which is the oldest thing Nike does: since Bill Bowerman was cutting soles down for his Oregon runners in the 1960s, the brand's best product has come from making something for one specific fast person and then selling everyone else the same tool. Style code FD6556 100 marks the colourway.
Run it, do not walk it. For a marathon, wear it with plain shorts and a fitted singlet, thin socks and nothing that flaps, and let the shoe be the only statement in the outfit. For a race week tune up, grey or black training kit keeps the focus on getting used to the plate rather than on the colourway. Two or three sessions of familiarisation before the start line is sensible, since the roll is unlike a normal trainer. Fit is snug and low volume, so try it on with race socks and late in the day. Wipe clean by hand, keep it away from radiators and hot boots, and store it flat rather than crushed.
Nike built its authority on distance running with Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil and the brand's first track endorser, whose statue stands at headquarters, and kept it through sponsored runners including Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. The Vaporfly turned that authority into a controversy. Peer research found the shoe could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and on 31 January 2020 World Athletics issued rules capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring shoes to be openly available at retail. The shoe was never banned, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal, which is the detail most retellings get wrong.
ZoomX foam and a full length carbon fibre plate do the work, under an upper stripped to almost nothing so the weight stays where it helps. The plate is what gives the shoe its signature roll: it resists compression through the middle of the stance and pushes you forward instead of letting you sink. That feel is worth learning before race day, because it rewards a runner who lands and moves rather than one who lingers. The upper on this pairing is light and open, so it drains and breathes but offers little in the way of protection. Nike does not publish stack figures across the board, so trust the sensation at pace over anything you read secondhand.
