Part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Bold Orange/Neon Green/White/Dark Grey. This is the shoe that changed distance running. The Vaporfly launched in 2017 pairing ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the lightest and most responsive in its range, with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every step, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by as much as 4.2 percent. The third Next% version continues that project, and the Sail and orange treatment gives it a warm, almost off white body with a citrus charge, which is a racing shoe that photographs well and looks less clinical than the pure white versions. It is the direct heir to Bill Bowerman's original complaint about heavy shoes.
Two uses. Race: a singlet, split shorts, thin socks, and no other new gear, since race day is the wrong time to test anything. Long tempo: use it for the marathon paced session you want to feel good in, then stop. Fit is snug and low volume through the midfoot, so try it with racing socks and expect to size the same as your other racers rather than your daily trainer. Keep total mileage low and deliberate, because ZoomX gives its best over a limited life, and store it out of sun so the Sail upper does not yellow before the foam is even finished.
No shoe has been argued about more in modern athletics. The research showing a measurable time benefit forced the sport to write a rulebook, and the rulebook in turn made this technology a public conversation rather than a lab detail. Nike's authority to be at the centre of that goes back to its first track endorser, Steve Prefontaine, whose statue stands at the company headquarters, and continues through Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix. Racing in a Vaporfly is joining a debate about whether a shoe should help, and answering it with your feet.
The mechanism is honest and public: high rebound ZoomX foam under a full length carbon plate, wrapped in the thinnest upper the design will allow. That combination stiffens the toe off and returns energy that a soft trainer absorbs, which is why the category is regulated. World Athletics issued rules on 31 January 2020 limiting sole thickness to 40mm and one rigid plate and requiring four months of open retail availability, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal to race in. Sail is a pale, warm colour that marks easily, so keep this pair off wet roads, brush it dry, never machine wash it, and let the foam rest fully between hard efforts.
