Released on 14 January 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in University Red/Sea Glass/Melon Tint/Blue Joy. Nike did not begin as a shoemaker. It began in 1964 in Eugene, Oregon, when track coach Bill Bowerman and his former runner Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbon Sports and sold imported Japanese running shoes out of the boot of a car at track meets, because Bowerman believed American runners deserved something lighter than the domestic market gave them. That argument never really closed, and the Vaporfly is its most extreme answer. Launched in 2017, the line was built to make marathon running measurably faster rather than merely more comfortable. The Next% 3 is the third turn of that idea. University Red is the loudest way to own it, a saturated race-day red that reads from the far side of a stadium and cuts hard against grey road and green infield.
Two ways to use it. Race day: black split shorts, a plain white singlet, nothing else with colour on you, so the red is the only signal at the start line. Off duty: cropped black track pants and a grey crew, with the red sitting as the single accent under an otherwise monochrome fit, which is honestly the only styling this shoe takes well. Save the mileage for tempo sessions and races rather than daily easy runs, because ZoomX gives its best return when you are actually moving. Size true and test them in your race socks, since the thin upper is unforgiving of any bunching. Air them out after every run, keep them off radiators and out of washing machines, because heat and agitation flatten the foam.
Nike's cultural entry ran through track before it ran through anything else. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, was the brand's first track athlete endorser and still stands as a statue at its headquarters, and the sponsorship line that followed him runs through Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix. The Vaporfly pushed that from personality into measurement. Peer research found the shoe could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, a number big enough to start a public argument about where equipment ends and the athlete begins. University Red carries that history visibly.
The midsole is ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive material in the range, and it wraps a full length carbon fibre plate designed to generate extra spring in every step. That pairing is the whole shoe: the foam absorbs and returns, the plate stiffens the ride so the foot rolls forward instead of collapsing into the ground. The upper is cut thin because everything that matters happens underfoot. When World Athletics wrote its shoe rules on 31 January 2020, capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring open retail availability, it wrote them around this construction, and compliant Vaporfly models remained legal to race in. Treat the shoe as it was built: for pace, not for standing around.
