Designed by Kanye West and released on 27 May 2024 as part of the Yeezy Slides line. This release has a eva upper in Slate Marine/Slate Marine/Slate Marine. Slate Marine is the deep blue end of the Slide range, and the infants run is the smallest version of a design that was already as simple as footwear gets. Since December 2019 this model has been a single moulded shape with no laces, no fastening and no branding at all, which turns out to suit the youngest wearers better than it suits anyone else. The name follows the line's habit of borrowing from material and terrain rather than from fashion, in the same family as Moonrock, Pirate Black and Desert Rat. There is nothing on it a child can undo, pull off or lose, which is most of the argument for it.
Utility
Deep blue hides everything, which is the point at this age. Recipe one: cream shorts and a striped tee for warm weather, where the marine tone anchors a soft outfit and survives sand and water. Recipe two: grey joggers and a navy sweatshirt for cooler days, worn with a thick sock so the foot is held in the band. These suit the beach, the garden, the pool and short trips, not walking distance or any activity involving running. Check fit across the instep rather than at the toe, since there is no adjustment at all, and supervise on smooth wet floors. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry in shade, away from radiators and hot car interiors, which warp moulded foam.
Influence
The Slide, with the Foam Runner beside it, is the product that pushed this label past sneaker culture into general fashion, and the outline was imitated across the mass market so thoroughly that it became a generic shape rather than one brand's design. Infant sizing arrived because family sizing runs followed adult demand. The partnership behind all of it closed on 25 October 2022, when adidas terminated the deal following antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, and remaining inventory was sold through afterwards rather than replaced by new production.
Construction
The shoe is moulded as one continuous piece, with band, footbed and outsole coming out of the same tool, so no adhesive or stitching is holding anything together. Ridging underfoot provides grip and the footbed carries a light texture to stop the foot sliding forward. Because there is no adjustment, the fit is entirely down to the mould and the width of the opening, which is the main thing to check on an infant size. The foam is light, water resistant and coloured through the material, so knocks and scuffs blunt the surface rather than revealing anything underneath. It wipes clean in seconds.
