Origin
Released on 2 September 2022 and part of the Adilette 22 line. This release has a synthetic upper in Carbon/Carbon/Carbon. The Adilette is the oldest continuously relevant thing adidas makes that is not a shoe in the athletic sense: a poolside and locker room slide, built around a single moulded strap and the Three Stripes. The 22 generation redesigns it for a different context entirely, with a thicker, more sculptural footbed and a silhouette that belongs to contemporary streetwear rather than to a swimming club. Carbon is the version that commits hardest to that reading, a flat dark grey with no contrast striping, so the slide becomes an object rather than a uniform item. The Three Stripes still sit on the strap, which is the whole visual argument: the mark adidas bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 works even when it is the only thing on the product.
Utility
Recipe one: black nylon track pants with a grey hoodie and short socks, the Carbon slide finishing a look that would go wrong with a white slide. Recipe two: wide linen trousers in stone with a plain black tee for evening heat, where the dark footbed grounds a pale outfit. Slides fit long by nature, so if you are between sizes size down rather than up and let your heel sit near the back edge. These are for pool, travel, house and short errands, not for long walking days on wet stone, where the flat outsole gives up grip. Rinse them under a tap, scrub the footbed with a soft brush when it starts to look shiny, and dry them out of direct sun so the foam does not go brittle.
Influence
The slide's route into fashion followed the same pattern as most of adidas's cultural wins: the product was adopted before it was marketed. The Superstar was taken up wholesale by hip hop and gave the brand a second life it did not design, and the Adilette made a similar jump from the locker room to everyday wear, particularly through the tracksuit and terrace culture that made the Superstar and the Stan Smith the base layer of European casual dressing. In India the slide's usefulness is not seasonal but structural, given how much of daily life involves taking shoes off at a doorway. Carbon is the colour that lets a slide be worn outside without looking like it escaped from a gym bag.
Construction
A slide lives or dies on its footbed, and the 22 is built around a moulded contoured bed rather than the flat plank of the original Adilette. The contour cups the arch and heel, which is what lets the slide be worn for hours rather than metres. The strap is moulded rather than stitched, so there is no seam to fail and nothing to absorb water. Carbon is a tonal treatment across strap and base, meaning the Three Stripes register as debossed relief rather than as contrast colour. The material is a lightweight foam compound built for water exposure, which is why these dry fast and weigh almost nothing. Expect grip that is designed for wet tile, not for a wet street.
