Released on 2 October 2021 and part of Nike's Air Huarache line. This release has a synthetic upper in Dark Grey/Black/Laser Blue. The Huarache came out of a simple question: how little shoe do you actually need. Instead of a conventional upper stitched over a last, it used a neoprene inner sleeve wrapped by an exoskeleton, so the foot sits inside a sock and the structure sits outside it. That was a genuinely radical piece of thinking for a running shoe and it is the reason the silhouette still looks contemporary. Dark Grey is the version that lets you see the idea rather than the colour: a muted, cool grey that makes the heel cage and the sleeve read as two separate systems. It is the most architectural way to own this shoe.
Two recipes for a grey Huarache. First, technical: black or charcoal nylon trousers, a shell or a hooded mid-layer, and the shoe treated as part of a functional outfit, which is what its exoskeleton is asking for. Second, relaxed: light-wash denim and a plain sweatshirt, where the grey reads as an easy neutral. Because of the sleeve, size true but try them on if you have a high instep, and pull the heel tab properly rather than forcing the foot in. Good for walking, travel and casual wear, not for serious mileage. Hand clean only, use a soft brush on the sleeve, avoid soaking the neoprene, and air dry away from heat.
The Huarache belongs to the stretch when Nike's running experiments started being adopted as fashion faster than as sport. That pattern was already established: Air Max models, Air Force 1s and Air Jordans had all moved from performance into urban and hip hop dress and then into mainstream American youth wardrobes through the 1990s and 2000s. The Huarache joined that migration with a shape unlike anything else in the category, which is why it recurs in casual and athleisure looks every few years without needing a story attached. Nike's founding instinct, Bill Bowerman's belief that runners deserved lighter and better than the market offered, is visible in it more clearly than in most retros.
The build has two parts. The inner sleeve is a stretch material that wraps the foot without seams or overlays, and the outer structure, most visibly the moulded heel cage, holds that sleeve in position and stops the foot sliding on the platform. This is the same fundamental problem Nike later solved with Flywire cabling, holding the foot with tension rather than with layers of material, and the Huarache is the early ancestor of that thinking. Nike Air cushioning sits in the midsole, the pressurised platform in use since 1987. Wearing it, expect a snug, sock-like entry that can be tight over a high instep, and a shoe that needs almost no break-in because there is barely anything rigid in it.
