Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 23 November 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Fire Red/Cement Grey/Sail. The Air Jordan 3 is the hinge of the whole line. Nike handed design to Tinker Hatfield after the first two models, and the 3 is where he introduced the elephant print and put the Jumpman on the tongue, turning a signature shoe into a series with its own material vocabulary. Black Cement is the darkest and most quoted of its original colourways, grey elephant print running against black with cement grey accents, and it is the make up most people picture when they picture a 3. This is the OG grade school version, cut for younger feet and produced in a 2024 run under style code DM0967 010, which keeps the original detailing rather than modernising it.
Black and grey is the easy end of the catalogue. Recipe one: black straight leg jeans, a grey hoodie, a black puffer, so the elephant print is the only texture in play. Recipe two: olive cargo trousers, a white tee, a denim jacket, where the cement grey pulls the outfit together without adding a colour. Good year round, fine in city weather, not built for heavy rain. Size carefully because grade school lasts run narrow, wear a proper sock, and lace through every eyelet since the 3 relies on the midfoot for hold. Brush the print dry after wear and keep the black leather conditioned so it does not crease grey along the toe.
No single Jordan material has travelled further than elephant print. It moved from this shoe into apparel, collaborations and the wider streetwear vocabulary, and it is one reason Air Jordan turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity. Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete and namesake, signed in 1984 on terms that still pay him royalties, and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising ran alongside this era. Black Cement in a grade school size is often the pair that starts somebody's collection, which is a real part of how this brand renews itself across generations rather than aging with one.
Elephant print is the point. The cracked grey pattern Hatfield introduced on this model is now recognisable enough to signal the brand with no logo attached, and here it wraps the toe and heel against black leather panels. Nike Air cushioning, part of the line from the Air Jordan II, sits below. The Jumpman on the tongue is the model's other identifier and it dates the shoe to the moment the Wings logo of the earliest era was retired from the front. Grade school sizing means a slightly narrower last, so try before committing if you are sizing up from a youth fit. Clean the print with a soft dry brush only: wet scrubbing flattens its texture.
