Origin
Released on 26 February 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudsurfer line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Eclipse. This is the Cloudsurfer taken off the road, waterproofed, and painted in Black Eclipse so it disappears into bad weather rather than fighting it. On's naming system does most of the explaining: Cloud for the house, Surfer for the ride, Trail for the ground, Waterproof for the membrane. Behind all of it sits the 2010 Zurich origin, Olivier Bernhard's garden hose glued to a sole to prove that a hollow shape could cushion on landing and firm up for push off, an idea he took to Nike and had rejected. A dark waterproof trail shoe is that concept at its least glamorous and most useful, built for the days when nobody is looking at your shoes anyway.
Utility
Two ways to run it. On the trail, pair it with black weatherproof tights or lined running trousers and a hooded shell, with a merino sock, since waterproof uppers hold heat and moisture from the inside. In town, wear it with dark technical trousers or black jeans and a heavy parka for wet commutes, where the membrane genuinely earns its place. Best for winter, rain, mud and mixed terrain, and less pleasant on hot dry days. Rinse mud off the outside with cool water rather than scrubbing it dry, clear the pods with a brush, and never dry it on a radiator, which damages waterproof membranes faster than anything else. Size with room for a thicker sock.
Influence
On's outdoor line comes from a company whose credibility was earned in endurance sport, not in fashion: triathlon and road racing first, the On Athletics Club under coach Dathan Ritzenhein later, and bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics along the way. That gives a black waterproof trail shoe more weight than a lifestyle brand's version of the same idea. The wider cultural reading of On today is design object, a Swiss engineered shoe people wear because it looks engineered, and the all-black trail make-up is the quietest possible entry into that. It is the shoe you buy when you actually go outside in winter.
Construction
The waterproof designation is the headline feature here and it changes how the shoe behaves: less breathable than a mesh runner, warmer in summer, and far better once the ground is soaked. Underneath, CloudTec does its usual work as a structural cushioning system, foam engineered into geometry so the pods compress horizontally and vertically and support the foot in several directions, which matters more on a rutted path than on tarmac. The Black Eclipse treatment runs dark across the upper and the sole, so mud reads as texture rather than damage. Trail versions of road platforms trade some softness for grip and containment, and you should expect a more locked-down, less floaty feel than a standard Cloudsurfer.
